"We gave our project three names: Business Central Italy, Business Central Germany and Business Central Netherlands."
We were conducting an ERP Masterclass, and the CIO of a mid-sized organization told me about the chosen project names. These names seemed practical and efficient to him.
When I asked him to what extent the chosen names contributed to the success of his project, he fell silent.
"Not really," he said.
ERP project names are often practical rather than inspiring. Or that they make clear what the purpose of the project is. Think of "the <name solution> project". Or the rather popular "ERP 2.0." Inspiring? Not really, huh?!
3 Advantages
Project names are most effective when they are connected to the organization's strategic goals. This offers at least three advantages:
- The project is no longer seen as purely an IT project, but as a project to which all departments contribute.
- The entire management team understands the crucial importance of this project. After all, they themselves determined the strategy!
- And the project's impact doesn't stop at GoLive, as is often the case with traditional project names.
Name requirements
Determining a strong and effective project name is no easy task. And it's certainly not the sole responsibility of IT or Finance. Smart organizations involve their marketing department in this process.
Ideally, all employees will be able to explain to their family and friends why you are doing this project, what the goals are, and the attitudes required from all team members.
Lot’s to learn….
In the ERP Masterclass, you'll learn how to create a project name that actively contributes to your project's success, along with many other important success and failure factors.
What's the best name you've ever seen in your projects?
