The average size of a Dynamics 365 practice has increased significantly in the past 5 to 10 years. That means that internal distances have grown. Between marketing and sales, for example. Between sales and delivery. And certainly also between the management and the daily operation.
The logical consequence of this is that good ideas and smart process innovations from the internal organization are more likely to stick. And not be converted into concrete actions.
The daily hustle and bustle and not taking enough time for reflection are identifiable causes. But also the recognition that not every colleague has the skills and drive to actively pitch their ideas.
That is of course a pity! Because oftentimes the best improvements still come from daily practice.
My workshop Project Excellence is all about marketing, selling, implementing and supporting sustainable Project Success. And one of the most successful exercises of this workshop is the question 'What would you do if you were CEO for one day?'
How it works
Each colleague is presented with this homework question 2 weeks before the workshop. So that they have time to reflect. Of course, I appeal to the responsibility that comes with this temporary role. As an example - doubling all salaries sounds great, but of course is not really realistic.
During the exercise, I ensure that the CEO receives all input in silence to avoid the risk that he or she interrupts. And that the whole theme is gone. The rule is that they may only ask questions for clarification.
The outcome of this exercise is a list of large and small ideas, improvements and (process) innovations.
The follow-up
In an ideal situation, this list is deduplicated immediately after the workshop, given priorities, divided into domains and assigned to specific groups of colleagues. The CEO commits to the team to actively monitor progress. And to ensure regular feedback.
Because no matter how important your role is, no one has a monopoly on good ideas. Right?
